Photoshop Rework

I've always had mixed feelings about this piece. When I painted it in watercolors I originally had fireflies in mind but after several tries it never quite looked right and the fireflies evolved into snow. Well, I thought maybe I could rework it Photoshop and actually accomplish the effect I wanted. I think I did but I'm not sure which one I prefer. Hmmm...

I love the painting and the feelings that your colour choice evokes. If I had to choose between the two, I'd pick the first one. :)

you know the 2nd one looks more orderly, but the first one is more free...so it just depends on the person. I like the 'free' one. and go figure, I consider myself orderly.

They're both quite pretty! The first one looks like glowing snow (which is pretty) and I get it in the seocnd one.

Hey, my talented friend. I love the first one. Ironically, it allows the fox to stand out more, I guess because the snow is visually logical in this one. The second one could work if you were going for the firefly effect but I would suggest deleting the ones under his feet (even though they are technically foreground based on the perspective angle) and add haloed circles of soft light around them since it is a twilight setting. I love the fox and the trees and the lighting in the setting and the journey implied. Great work!

@Jennifer- Thank you so much for your insight! Totally agree, gurl!

Thank you for the sweet birthday wishes. I have struggled with this one...quite a bit. On the illo front I joined SCBWI, FINALLY! Bad news - there are no illo critique groups in my region :( all writers. So, I might ask you to give the critical eye to my work, maybe start an only exchange of 2 and see if others want in. Just a thought. Anyway. I really just came by to say HI and thank you.

I like the first one best. In the second, they seem to be attacking the fox like a swarm of fleas....and you know what a pain THEY can be!

Thanks for all you opinions and ideas! I think the general consensus is a preference to the first one. And I agree! It's so hard for me to see my illustrations with fresh eyes, so it's AWESOME that I have wonderful people to help me! Thanks again!

This is SOOOOOO lovely Michalele!!

Since you asked, here are my two cents.

Both are lovely. The snow one is beautiful and magical and works just as is.

Now, the fireflies one I think I know why you are not sure about it, and again this is just my opinion. The fireflies would work better if they had a warm and bright yellow glow. Right now, they look as if they could be snow perhaps so it feels like the piece is missing something.

Color can do amazing things. I always surprise myself when I play with it digitally. :o)

Thanks, Michaele! I really like the one with the snow. Having the white dots as more of an overall pattern seems to wotk better, for me.

I like the first version but it's really about preference isn't it? I think one can think they're fireflies or snow - both of them works.
