Art Nouveau Katniss Everdeen, y'all!

Sometimes my love for comic books (before they were called graphic novels--yes, I'm that old) and all things geeky must merge and sporadically make something. For the record, I love the Hunger Games. I love Art Nouveau. I love comics. Therefore, I must get my geek on and mash them all together and see what happens! Mwahahahaaaa! What's next? I have no idea but I did see finally see Pacific Rim and LOVED IT! So maybe giant robot art nouveau mashup? Maybe.

I Can See Just Fine

Hello everyone!

I just had to brag tell you that I won Eric Barclay's incredible, fantastic, beautiful, hilarious, new book: I Can See Just Fine! He was a having a promotional give-away on his blog and I just happened to win it (SO COOL!). First things first, his artwork is stunning...really stunning. The kind of stunning that makes you shake your hand in the air and say to yourself, "This is so stunning, I wish I thought of that!" But what I didn't know about Eric though, is how funny and awesome a writer he is too.

When the package arrived, I was so excited that I--may or may not have--squealed and jumped up and down a bunch of times. My son and I immediately read it, giggling the entire time. Then we read it again and again. THEN, he took it to a corner (away from his little sister's grabby hands) and read it a dozen more times, laughing to himself the entire time. I think it's safe to say, we LOVE this book! I don't want to give anything away, but I think you may get the gist of the story by the cover and title. What I can tell you is, this book is truly wonderful, especially for a kid who needs to wear glasses!

It's available in Hardback, Kindle and the Nook.

Interview With Yours Truly!

Hello, everyone! My lovely and very talented friend, Sarah Romano Diehl, interviewed me on her newly updated, sparkly blog. She's a wonderful artist with an retro (1940's) eye that makes me very happy. Check it out here ( if you find time.

SCBWI Western Washington Conference

Tomorrow will be my fourth conference and I'm so excited! I get to hang with my artsy friends, attend fantastic workshops and look at some awesome work. After such painful stuff in the news, I'm hoping all that vibrant, positive, artistic energy will help balance out the universe a bit. I know many people need it right now.

My portfolio needed a few black and whites, so I illustrated one of my favorite children's stories growing up, Momotaro, which means Peach Boy. My grandparents gave me the book Japanese Children's Favorite Stories, illustrated by one of my all time fave illustrator, Yoshisuke Kurosaki. I LOVED this book growing up. And what made my book even more special was that it was blessed by my grandparents buddhist priest. I would spend hours reading it and sometimes just staring at it.

I've always been intimidated by the beauty of the book and incredible talent of Kurosaki that I never even considered doing my own version of it, but it just kind of happened. I'm hoping I did it justice!

My Snazzy, Redesigned Blog AND Website

Okay, I'm finally getting a little free time with my daughter's nap schedule solidifying. Thank you Universe! So I decided the first order of things was to do a little art housekeeping. I resnazzified my blog with a new background and layout. Check out my custom buttons on the right, y'all! I'm almost proud of myself for figuring it out. I would be fully proud of myself if I wasn't slightly embarrassed at how long it took me to figure out.

I also redid my website. Actually, my website was built through an Apple platform but when iCloud was implemented my website went bye bye. So sad. But it gave me an opportunity to create a new site that complimented my blog. Check it out, if you (or you can be adventurous and click on my custom, snazzy website button on the right--who knows where it will take you).

I'm also on Twitter, y'all! Yes, it's that yellow, bird button on the right. Trying to figure out if I'm into it or not. There is just so much information out there, it's a little crazy!

Happy New Year From the Pacific Northwest!

I wish/hope/pray this year is filled with inspiration, opportunity and love for everyone. I'm grateful that 2012 gave me and my family a healthy new, little person to nurture. A little person that my doctors and my medical history didn't think was possible. I feel so blessed. But 2012 was a difficult and sad year for many people across the world and our nation. And I pray, for those who are sad and scared, may find peace and comfort in the years to come.

To quote a Matthew Dowd tweet, "hope...the new year ahead is all you dreamed of and desire. Pretend you have the courage."

My little (grown up) brother made this little video from my parents balcony on New Year's Day. Love the light and those PacNW mountains!

Hello, my friends. I've been out of the loop for awhile. My pregnancy was quite high maintenance and stressful but thankfully our little peanut came out perfect as a peach. She did arrive a little early and spent a few extra days in the hospital learning how to breathe but she's now doing fantastic! But--ohmygoodness--I forgot how hard and tiring a newborn was. Every night is like the night of the living dead cuz I'm a zombie (yes, I look like one too). She's worth it, of course, and it helps that she's so dang cute! Hopefully, I'll find time to do some artwork but in the meantime I'm going to follow what my fabulous artist friends are doing and store up my inspiration like squirrels during the winter!

Hola Y'all!

I've been so out of the loop with my blog it's not even funny. Well, what I haven't really broadcasted is I'm about 8 months pregnant. Taking care of my 5 year old and managing nausea, exhaustion, headaches and feeling absolutely ginormous has left with me with little energy to do much--like laundry and artwork and walking more than a block. I did have enough energy to go for a little photo shoot with my fabulous friend, Kelsey Clanton, who is just magical with a camera.

She and her awesome hubby and writer/illustrator extraordinaire, Ben Clanton of Ben Clanton's Squiggles and Scribbles, have a shared website that showcases her photography/design and Ben's sketches (and maybe a smoothie recipe or two as well) that is just wonderful! Please check it out.

I'm on Amazon, y'all!

Finished illustrating my book, Playful Moon, awhile ago and now it's on sale at Amazon. Pretty strange and cool to type my name in the search box and a product pops up! It's for a wonderful organization. Please check it out here!

Happy MLK Day!

Had to post this vimeo gem by daneissil, in honor of the great Dr. King.
